On her 1989 debut Raw Like Sushi, Neneh Cherry, the Swedish-born and London-based daughter of jazz great Don, sang and rapped with dangerous levels of style and helped create a snarling-cool blueprint that people like Lauryn Hill and M.I.A. would, to some extent, follow. After 1996′s Man, she largely retired from music to raise kids.
